The Bible
  1. Ex. 23:20

20Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.

  2. Matt. 8:1-11, 13-17

1When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

2And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

3And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

4And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

5And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

11And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

13And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

14And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever.

15And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.

16When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

  3. Matt. 9:2-8

2And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.

3And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.

4And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

5For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?

6But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

7And he arose, and departed to his house.

8But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

  4. Matt. 10:1-8, 11-14, 16-20, 27, 40

1And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

    2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

    3Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphæus, and Lebbæus, whose surname was Thaddæus;

4Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

5These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not.

6But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

8Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

... 11And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

12And when ye come into an house, salute it.

13And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

16Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

    17But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

18And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

19But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

20For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

... 27What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

40He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

  5. Matt. 12:22-28

22Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.

23And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

24But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

25And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

26And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

27And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

28But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
by Mary Baker Eddy

  1. SH 367:17-32

A Christian Scientist occupies the place at this period 18of which Jesus spoke to his disciples, when he said: “Ye The salt of the earthare the salt of the earth.” “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill can -21not be hid.” Let us watch, work, and pray that this salt lose not its saltness, and that this light be not hid, but radiate and glow into noontide glory.

24    The infinite Truth of the Christ-cure has come to this age through a “still, small voice,” through silent utter-ances and divine anointing which quicken and increase 27the beneficial effects of Christianity. I long to see the consummation of my hope, namely, the student’s higher attainments in this line of light.

30    Because Truth is infinite, error should be known as nothing. Because Truth is omnipotent in goodness, error, Truth’s opposite, has no might.

  2. SH 410:20-30

Here is a definite and inspired proclama-21tion of Christian Science.

    MENTAL TREATMENT ILLUSTRATED

The Science of mental practice is susceptible of no 24misuse. Selfishness does not appear in the practice of Be not afraidTruth or Christian Science. If mental prac-tice is abused or is used in any way except to 27promote right thinking and doing, the power to heal mentally will diminish, until the practitioner’s healing ability is wholly lost. Christian scientific practice be-30gins with Christ’s keynote of harmony, “Be not afraid!”

  3. SH 411:3, 20-9

My first discovery in the student’s practice was this: If the student silently called the disease by name, when Naming diseaseshe argued against it, as a general rule the body 6would respond more quickly, — just as a per-son replies more readily when his name is spoken; but this was because the student was not perfectly attuned to 9divine Science, and needed the arguments of truth for reminders. If Spirit or the power of divine Love bear witness to the truth, this is the ultimatum, the scientific 12way, and the healing is instantaneous.

The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is 21fear, ignorance, or sin. Disease is always induced by a Fear as the foundationfalse sense mentally entertained, not destroyed. Disease is an image of thought externalized. 24The mental state is called a material state. Whatever is cherished in mortal mind as the physical condition is imaged forth on the body.

27    Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients. Silently reassure them as to their exemp-Unspoken pleadingtion from disease and danger. Watch the re-30sult of this simple rule of Christian Science, and you will find that it alleviates the symptoms of every disease. If you succeed in wholly removing the fear, 412 412:1your patient is healed. The great fact that God lovingly governs all, never punishing aught but sin, is your stand-3point, from which to advance and destroy the human fear of sickness. Mentally and silently plead the case scien-tifically for Truth. You may vary the arguments to meet 6the peculiar or general symptoms of the case you treat, but be thoroughly persuaded in your own mind concern-ing the truth which you think or speak, and you will be 9the victor.

  4. SH 412:13

The power of Christian Science and divine Love is omnipotent. It is indeed adequate to un-15clasp the hold and to destroy disease, sin, and death.

  5. SH 369:5, 16

In proportion as matter loses to human sense all en-6tity as man, in that proportion does man become its Man’s entitymaster. He enters into a diviner sense of the facts, and comprehends the theology of Jesus 9as demonstrated in healing the sick, raising the dead, and walking over the wave. All these deeds manifested Jesus’ control over the belief that matter is substance, 12that it can be the arbiter of life or the constructor of any form of existence.

Jesus never asked if disease were acute or chronic, and he never recommended atten-18tion to laws of health, never gave drugs, never prayed to know if God were willing that a man should live. He understood man, whose Life is God, to be immortal, and 21knew that man has not two lives, one to be destroyed and the other to be made indestructible.

  6. SH 381:31-11

Christ Jesus overruled the error which would impose penalties for transgressions of the physical laws of 382 382:1health; he annulled supposed laws of matter, opposed Begin rightlyto the harmonies of Spirit, lacking divine au-3thority and having only human approval for their sanction.

If half the attention given to hygiene were given to the 6study of Christian Science and to the spiritualization of Hygiene excessivethought, this alone would usher in the millen-nium. Constant bathing and rubbing to alter 9the secretions or to remove unhealthy exhalations from the cuticle receive a useful rebuke from Jesus’ precept, “Take no thought . . . for the body.”

  7. SH 365:7-24

The benign thought of Jesus, finding utterance in such words as “Take no thought for your life,” would heal 9the sick, and so enable them to rise above the supposed necessity for physical thought-taking and doctoring; but if the unselfish affections be lacking, and common 12sense and common humanity are disregarded, what men-tal quality remains, with which to evoke healing from the outstretched arm of righteousness?

15    If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one Speedy healingvisit, and the disease will vanish into its native 18nothingness like dew before the morning sun-shine. If the Scientist has enough Christly affection to win his own pardon, and such commendation as the Mag-21dalen gained from Jesus, then he is Christian enough to practise scientifically and deal with his patients compas-sionately; and the result will correspond with the spiritual 24intent.

  8. SH 429:31-5

Jesus said (John viii. 51), “If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.” That statement is not con-430430:1fined to spiritual life, but includes all the phenomena of existence. Jesus demonstrated this, healing the dying 3Life all-inclusiveand raising the dead. Mortal mind must part with error, must put off itself with its deeds, and immortal manhood, the Christ ideal, will appear.
