Healing by overcoming fear
Wednesday, December 28, 2011
The Bible:
  1. Ps. 46:1, 2, 10

1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

    2Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

10Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

  2. I Kings 18:17, 18, 21, 23, 24, 26, 30, 32 and he, 33, 34, 36-39

17¶And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

18And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.

21And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

23Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

24And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

26And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

30And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.

32and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

33And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

34And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

36And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

38Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.

  3. I Kings 19:1-4 (to 3rd ;), 5-12

1And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time.

3And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

    4¶But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life;

5And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

6And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

7And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

8And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9¶And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

10And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

11And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

12And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

  4. Psalms 91:1-6, 7 it, 9-12, 14-16

1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

    5Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7it shall not come nigh thee.

    9Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

  5. Luke 8:40-42, 49-56 (to :)

40And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.

41¶And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:

42For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a-dying. But as he went the people thronged him.

49¶While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.

50But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.

51And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.

52And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.

53And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.

54And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.

55And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.

    56And her parents were astonished:

  6. I John 4:16, 17 as, 18 (to :)

16And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

17as he is, so are we in this world.

18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear:

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
by Mary Baker Eddy:

  1. 410:14, 29-30

Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger.
15The more difficult seems the material condition to be
    Love casteth
    out fear
overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our
faith and the purer our love.
    The Apostle
18John says: "There is no fear in Love, but perfect Love
casteth out fear. . . . He that feareth is not made per-
    fect in Love."
Here is a definite and inspired proclama-
    21tion of Christian Science.

    Christian scientific practice be-
30gins with Christ's keynote of harmony, "Be not afraid!"

  2. 139:4-9

From beginning to end, the Scriptures are full of
accounts of the triumph of Spirit, Mind, over matter.

    Marvels and
    reformations
6Moses proved the power of Mind by what men
called miracles; so did Joshua, Elijah, and
    Elisha.
The Christian era was ushered in with signs and
    9wonders.

  3. 585:9-12

9Elias. Prophecy; spiritual evidence opposed to mate-
rial sense; Christian Science, with which can be discerned
    the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold;
    12the basis of immortality.

  4. 323:28-4

The effects of Christian Science are not so much seen
    Childlike
    receptivity
    as felt.
It is the "still, small voice" of Truth
    30uttering itself.
    We are either turning away
from this utterance, or we are listening to it and going
    up higher.
Willingness to become as a little child and
324:1to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of
    the advanced idea.
Gladness to leave the false landmarks
3and joy to see them disappear, ” this disposition helps
    to precipitate the ultimate harmony.

  5. 367:24-32

24The infinite Truth of the Christ-cure has come to this
age through a "still, small voice," through silent utter-
ances and divine anointing which quicken and increase
    27the beneficial effects of Christianity.
    I long to see the
consummation of my hope, namely, the student's higher
attainments in this line of light.

30Because Truth is infinite, error should be known as
    nothing.
Because Truth is omnipotent in goodness,
error, Truth's opposite, has no might.

  6. 444:10

    Step by
step will those who trust Him find that "God is our refuge
12and strength, a very present help in trouble."

  7. 12:31

    In divine
Science, where prayers are mental, all may avail them-
13:1selves of God as "a very present help in trouble."

Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and
    3bestowals.
It is the open fount which cries, "Ho,
every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters."

  8. 368:31

When fear disappears, the foundation of disease
    is gone.
Once let the mental physician believe in the
369:1reality of matter, and he is liable to admit also the reality
of all discordant conditions, and this hinders his de-
    3stroying them.
Thus he is unfitted for the successful
    treatment of disease.

  9. 180:17-27

Doctors should not implant disease in the thoughts of
18their patients, as they so frequently do, by declaring dis-
    Wrong and
    right way
ease to be a fixed fact, even before they go to
work to eradicate the disease through the ma-
    21terial faith which they inspire.
    Instead of furnishing
thought with fear, they should try to correct this turbulent
element of mortal mind by the influence of divine Love
    24which casteth out fear.

When man is governed by God, the ever-present
Mind who understands all things, man knows that with
    27God all things are possible.

  10. 181:25

It is unnecessary to resort to aught besides
Mind in order to satisfy the sick that you are doing some-
27thing for them, for if they are cured, they generally know
    it and are satisfied.

  11. 377:20-29

    Remove the
21leading error or governing fear of this lower so-called mind,
and you remove the cause of all disease as well as the mor-
bid or excited action of any organ.
    You also remove in
24this way what are termed organic diseases as readily as
    functional difficulties.

The cause of all so-called disease is mental, a mortal
27fear, a mistaken belief or conviction of the necessity and
power of ill-health; also a fear that Mind is helpless to
defend the life of man and incompetent to control it.

  12. 393:16

Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind
governs, and that in Science man reflects God's govern-
    No pain
    in matter
    18ment.
Have no fear that matter can ache,
swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law
of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have
    21no pain nor inflammation.
    Your body would suffer no
more from tension or wounds than the trunk of a tree
which you gash or the electric wire which you stretch,
24were it not for mortal mind.

  13. 495:14

When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling
15steadfastly to God and His idea.
    Allow nothing but His
    Steadfast and
    calm trust
likeness to abide in your thought.
    Let neither
fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and
18calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious ” as
Life eternally is ” can destroy any painful sense of, or
belief in, that which Life is not.
    Let Christian Science,
21instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of
being, and this understanding will supplant error with
Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence dis-
    24cord with harmony.

  14. 559:8-16

    The "still, small voice"
9of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean
    to the globe's remotest bound.
    The inaudible voice of
Truth is, to the human mind, "as when a lion roareth."

12It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear. It
arouses the "seven thunders" of evil, and stirs their latent
forces to utter the full diapason of secret tones.
    Then is
15the power of Truth demonstrated, ” made manifest in
    the destruction of error.
